Hamlet

by William Shakespeare

Hamlet struggles with loss. Hamlet wrestles with doubt. Hamlet fights to survive. We are Hamlet.

The Barter Player Encore Company brings you William Shakespeare’s Hamlet as you’ve never experienced it before. The Barter Player Encore Company is made up of Barter Player alumni with a passion for making Shakespeare accessible to our audiences. Bringing the text from the page to the stage, the Encore Company sets Hamlet in a place very like our own world full of loss, fear and betrayal.

With workshops, created by Barter’s Project REAL and led by the actors, students immerse themselves in the themes of the play, as well as get hands-on experience with Shakespeare’s use of rhythm and language. The 10-minute pre-show workshop includes a summary of Hamlet, as well as an introduction to Shakespeare’s use of iambic pentameter. After the performance, actors get students on their feet for a 50-minute session. By delving into the plot of the play they’ve just experienced, students discuss themes of fear, trust, abandonment, and betrayal in their own lives, as well as Hamlet’s.

The National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest presents Shakespeare in American Communities. Barter Theatre is one of 40 professional theatre companies selected to participate in bringing the finest productions of Shakespeare to middle- and high-school students in communities across the United States. This is the twelfth year of this national program, the largest tour of Shakespeare in American history.

Find out more about Shakespeare in American Communities, here: www.shakespeareinamericancommunities.org

To see if you qualify, contact Group Sales Manager, Ryan Gray at 276.619.5406, or by email at groups@bartertheatre.com.

Hamlet is a two-act play, approximately 2 hours long, with a 15-minute intermission. Morning performances include a 10-minute introductory workshop before the performance and a 50-minute immersive workshop after the performance. Evening performances do not include workshops.
