Barter Theatre’s Annual Fund for Artistic Excellence is an integral part of Barter’s success. The Annual Fund depends on individuals, regional businesses, national corporations and government to provide Barter Theatre with a steadfast foundation of continued financial support.

Porterfield Society members provide permanent and lasting support of Barter Theatre through deferred gift planning.

Grants from local and national foundations play an important role in the work of

Supporting innovative programs like:
Distance Learning Program - funded by Verizon and the Jessie Ball duPont Fund. The first of its kind in the nation, Barter is able to offer, free of charge, educational workshops high schools in Southwestern Virginia.

Young Playwrights Festival - funded by the Olin and Muriel Prather, Crutchfield and Bank of America Foundations, this annual high school playwriting competition sees more than 120 entries yearly from high school students in Northeast Tennessee, Southwestern Virginia and West Virginia.

Capital Improvements to the Barter Inn, the Barter Scene Shop and Stonewall Square provided by The McGlothlin Foundation and the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification Foundation are vital to sustaining top quality artists and technicians and to providing our patrons with the best experience possible.
