Following up the sensational , fun success of last Summer’s The Music Man Intensive, Barter is extending the hard-working fun into a 3-week Workshop:
The King and I - From Start to Finish: The Process!
Popular teacher / director David Alford will lead a special group of students on the step-by-step journey of how to audition, rehearse and then present in simple workshop format the famous American musical The King and I, by Rodgers and Hammerstein!
This 3-week Intensive will culminate in an evening showing of the students’ work on the Coomes Center outdoor stage, and all are welcome to attend this final class project presentation. David will be assisted by Barter choreographer Amanda Aldridge, and various other Barter performers throughout the 3 weeks of the Intensive.
WEEK #1: These first 5 days – from 12 noon to 5:00 p.m. – basic skills will be taught through an introduction to the audition process, how to prepare an audition, project voice and character in an audition, how to move, speak and sing under the intense pressure of “going for a role”!! While David and his assistants are teaching the importance of certain skills, they will also be watching, assessing and taking note of how to cast the class in the planned show, so the week is “learning in action” - growing skills while going for the
goal of achieving a role.
WEEK #2: These 5 days – again from 12 noon to 5:00 p.m. – “Putting It Together”: the kids will be taught the techniques and skills of a useful rehearsal process. How to learn music, how to learn dance combinations and routines quickly, how to interpret and build strong theatrical characters, and how to put all three skills together seamlessly (singing/dancing/acting) for a well-rounded performance. This is the how, the why and the what of a good rehearsal process, so that the students will take away specific skills that will help them the rest of the careers!
WEEK #3: These last 5 days – again from 12 noon to 5:00 p.m. except for the last Friday, which will go later due to the final class presentation , is all about taking the initial rehearsal techniques into the next stage: “Polishing It UP!!” – readying the show for a full-blooded, though production-simple, performance in front of an audience.
Please keep in mind: the final presentation – open to all who wish to watch – is NOT a finished production, with lights, costumes and scenery, but rather a final showing of the work the class has achieved up to that point! You will be amazed at how much your young actor has grown in the three-weeks leading up to this presentation.
