Barter Theatre

Teachers & Students

Barter Theatre is committed to educating students of all ages. You can see shows at the theatre or bring shows to your school – either way, you will be opening the door to new worlds you’ve never explored. Not only will our shows change the way you see things, but we have a whole host of educational opportunities that will extend and deepen what you learn from a Barter show.

The Emory & Henry College Theatre Program

(in association with Barter Theatre) takes our educational programing to the next level.

“You help us block out the real world for 2 hours and watch someone else’s… I have laughed, cried, gasped and screamed with each of the actors… You will never know how much of an impact you all have had on my life.” – student

Barter's Educational Mission

  • For seventy-five years, Barter has engaged in creative, cutting edge methods to provide its patrons, and the citizens of this region, with entertaining, educational theatre experiences that will positively and permanently benefit their lives.
  • Barter Theatre recognizes the powerful impact of theatre arts on education and provides affordable, educational and entertaining programming that meets testing requirements for SOLs and TCAPs as well as the requirements for other states. Barter Theatre’s programs help teachers creatively present information their students are studying as part of their school’s curriculum.

Arts are a meaningful part of every student’s life because they create meaningful and authentic learning experiences.

Emory & Henry College Theatre Association

The Emory & Henry Theatre Department operates in association Barter Theatre, ten minutes away from the E&H campus. This association offers theatre majors opportunities for professional internships, mentoring, workshops, and master classes throughout their college career. Barter staff members regularly serve as adjunct faculty and guest artists in the theatre department. In addition, E&H theatre majors have the opportunity to attend professional rehearsals, participate in “talk backs” with the actors and crew after Barter performances, and serve as understudies in Barter productions.
