Keep On the Sunny Side

April 22nd – May 20th on Gilliam Stage

Conceived and Written by Douglas Pote / Music and Lyrics by The Original Carter Family / Vocal Arrangements by Eugene Wolf / Musical Arrangement by Doug Dorschug

Come celebrate the original musical tale of America’s First Family of Country Music. When A.P. Carter convinces his wife Sara and his sister-in-law Maybelle to record with him at the Bristol Sessions, he has no idea he is about to change his life – and the world – forever. You’ll tap your toes to Carter Family favorites like Bury Me Under the Weeping Willow, Keep On the Sunnyside, Wildwood Flower, and Will the Circle Be Unbroken.

This play is a product of Barter's Appalachian Festival of Plays and Playwrights.

Since its mini-production in the 2002 Appalachian Festival of Plays and Playwrights, resident actor Eugene Wolf has portrayed A.P. Carter in every single Barter production of Keep on the Sunny Side. Meanwhile Rita Forrester, A.P.’s granddaughter, has been busy keeping A.P.’s memory alive and well at the Carter Family Fold, where she serves as Executive Director. Connect with these local legends as they join director Nick Piper in discussing what they have discovered about A.P Carter through the years of telling his story, and why the Carter Family music continues to be celebrated today.
